Front-end developers – 5 tips to improve your work-life balance
It’s no secret that today’s society demands a lot from professionals. Your professional and private life can often get mixed up, especially for front-end developers. Some front-end developers find it hard to stop coding, even when they’re at home. While it’s great to be pro-active in advancing your technical skills, it’s important to make sure you don’t become a workaholic! Tip #1: Beware of your work hours
Depending on your contract, you’ll need to work a certain amount of hours a week. Some front-end developers get so caught up in their work that they lose track of time, or end up taking on too many projects at once. It’s important to keep track of your work hours though; you’re the person who decides to arrive at 7am in the morning and to stop at 8pm. It’s okay to work late when a project needs some extra attention, but overworking yourself isn’t healthy on the long run. To remain a focussed front-end developer, it is important to keep this in mind.
Tip #2: Tune out
Technology allows people all over the world to communicate with each other easily, and offers a global platform for you to expand your professional network. Amongst developers, there are multiple communities such as Github, and Google Developers, where codes and learning programmes are exchanged. While it’s tempting to be constantly accessible, and send e-mails from home, it’s also important to switch off when you’re out of the office. Turn off your phone, shut down your laptop, and allow yourself some time to re-charge your own batteries!

Tip #3: Speak to your manager
You might find yourself in a situation when you’ve worked sweat and tears on a front-end development project, and can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel. You tell your friends about your concerns, and end up taking your problems home. Rather than losing sleep over it, why not schedule some time to speak to your manager? Most of the time, your worries will be worse than the reality. By talking to your manager, you’ll get help with your front-end development project, and really improve your situation. Not only will this relieve you of stress, it will allow you to improve your performance at work.
Tip #4: Evaluate your front-end development job from time to time
Work-life balance is something that is easily forgotten when you’re busy. Time flies, and before you know it, you’re celebrating a five-year front-end development anniversary with your current employer. While this can be a great thing, make sure to evaluate your position from time to time. Are you still up to date with the latest industry for instance? Would you be able to hit the ground running with a new employer? It’s important to make sure you don’t get too complacent and miss out on exciting front-end development opportunities.
