How to get the most out of a mentor

We hear from Huxley Partner Dr. Ami Fakey on her experience of mentorship and how to maximise the mentor/mentee relationship.

Last week, Prudential Women’s Network (PWN) held an event in London to shine a light on the value of mentoring in business, discussing the ways in which mentoring can affect progression, both professionally and personally. The event was hosted by Trainer, Speaker and Coach, Jenny Garrett, who delivered an inspiring presentation on the importance of mentoring in the workplace.

As part of the event, a number of influential business women were invited to share their stories, including Dr. Ami Fakey, Partner of Huxley Banking & Financial Services (picture: second from left). She shared her experiences of mentoring and being mentored throughout her career. Ami expressed her happiness at being given a platform to empower others through her own personal stories, “it’s good to be humble and open up about your own vulnerabilities and reflect on the experiences that you’ve been through”.

Ami was particularly passionate when discussing the importance of a strong relationship between a mentor and mentee, and stressed the benefit of taking the time to learn as much as possible about your counterpart; “if you can discover the changes that your mentee has gone through in their life and career, how they have grown and what they are seeking to accomplish, this can be of huge value”. Ami also explained that often people aren’t sure what they want to achieve, and if you’re armed with this knowledge, you can offer much more useful guidance.

Citing her own experiences, Ami voiced her opinion that receiving mentoring from multiple individuals was extremely beneficial, especially when gaining diverse insights from both male and female mentors; “it was interesting to speak to my male mentor and discover that things I had assumed were exclusive to female employees, he had seen happen to other men, it gave me a more balanced understanding”. Identifying a mentor outside of your immediate working life was also something that Ami felt was important, again allowing the mentee to gain an alternative perspective from an external source.

As a panellist Ami articulated the importance of giving and receiving feedback to the audience. Whether you’re a Partner or an entry level assistant, we all have the capacity to grow and learn in our roles. Ami was especially inspired by Huxley’s upcoming reverse mentoring programme, which will see Senior members of the business guided through the day-to-day life of a consultant, “it’s good to really be in touch with the business and see it from the consultant’s perspective, it’s an opportunity to genuinely understand the true culture of the business, commit to listen to an another’s perspective, to challenge my own”.

Providing support and mentoring is something that is prevalent through the upcoming ‘Return to Work’ scheme that Huxley are supporting. For so many women in business, time away from work isn’t out of the ordinary. Whether it’s due to starting a family or deciding to take a career break, it can often be difficult to know where to begin when you decide to return to work.
