5 tips to improve your work-life balance

When you’re a dedicated professional who’s passionate about your career, it’s easy to get your personal and professional life mixed up. While it’ great to be pro-active in your work, it’s important to make sure you’re finding time to switch off. We decided to take a look at five things you could do to make sure you’re achieving a healthy work-life balance.

Tip #1: Limit your work hours

It’s easy to get so caught up in your work that you lose track of time. And in a high-pressured job, you could end up working on so many projects that late nights in the office become a normal part of your routine. While all jobs will occasionally involve staying late, it’s important to make sure you don’t get into the habit of arriving at 7am and staying on until 9 at night. This isn’t just important so you can have time for yourself, it can also impact your productivity and creativity.

Tip #2: Zone out

So you’ve left the office, that’s step one – now you need to resist the temptation of checking your e-mails! It’s so easily done – you just open the app to see if anyone’s responded to that e-mail you sent at 5, and before you know it, you’ve spent your evening in a whirl wind of work-related communications. In today’s world, it’s so easy to be constantly accessible. While this has obvious benefits, it’s important to switch off, or you’ll be tempted to keep working and end up running yourself into the ground. Setting clear boundaries between home and work is essential.

Tip #3: Communicate

We’ve all been there; you work sweat and tears on a project and can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel. Before you know it, you take your problems home and become stressed. Rather than losing sleep over it, why not schedule in some time to speak to your manager? Communication is key, and a problem shared is often a problem halved. Sometimes, we’re all so consumed by our own projects, that we forget what’s happening around us. Opening up to your team can relieve pressure; delegating tasks and pushing back will allow you to hone your energy, focus, and be more productive in the long run. Not only will this relieve you of stress, it’ll likely improve your professional performance.

Tip #4: Tap into technology

We’ve touched on the negative impacts technology can have on your work-life balance, but there are many positive implications. Most companies offer some form of remote working, and if this is available to you, it can be a huge benefit. Time saved on traveling to and from work can be used more productively. Furthermore, with video conferencing becoming the norm in most companies, maximising this resource could allow you to cut down on your business trips.
