It’s all about data science: the top skills required to excel in AI

Big data, artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning are bringing us to the verge of technical disruption. Globally, we speak nearly 6,500 languages, but data is universally understood; it allows businesses to understand and react to complex problems. In order for systems to react to data, they’ll need to be trained thoroughly to become intelligent. Data science is a cornerstone in AI, so we decided to take a look at the top skills that can help you excel in the field.

Data scientists will stand at the forefront of the AI revolution

Data scientists and data specialists are highly skilled in clearly interpreting data and converting it into understandable patterns. The key to conversion is clean data. Clean data can be defined as flawless pieces of information in any form, whether that’s as numbers, words, images, customer details or behaviour. There’s a huge need for images and other data, combined with human intuition.

Let’s look at an example of how this works. Standing alone, AI is helpless at first; clean data is required to build algorithms for machine learning in order to become artificially intelligent. Machines need continuous training with these algorithms to be able to recognize patterns and situations. Once they can interpret situations correctly, they can make autonomous decisions. Self-driving cars, for instance, will need to learn how to interpret a situation. With the help of clean data, such as images of traffic, a car will be able to asses a potential risk.

In order to work with machine learning and AI, you’ll need to have a thorough understanding of coding languages. Some experts argue that Python is key to AI, whilst others state that any foundation language is a good way to start.

Taking data science a step further; the experience needed to make AI successful

Data science skills are a necessity, however more experience is needed to make AI successful. Business units will need to work together on this, and it’s essential that as a data scientist, you can demonstrate the following skills:

1. An adaptable and flexible mid set
Technical knowledge and skills are required to use a single system, but if you want to excel as an AI professional, you’ll need more than this. Adaptability and perseverance is key to combining a multitude of data, department knowledge, algorithms and system training.

2. An appreciation of key business requirements
In order to get the most out of AI, it’s important for you to clearly understand the key requirements of your business, so that you can use your technical skills to help them achieve their goals. AI can seem as a useful tool, but without seamless implementation and clean data, it’s a wasted resource.

3. Strong soft skills
The term AI is not always received positively; for many people, their first reaction is fear of job loss. When implementing AI in business processes, strong, consistent and clear communication is key to success. Working in short sprints, such as agile, with cross-functional teams, is likely to increase understanding and productivity.
