Senior or Established Life Risk Underwriter

Location: Sydney CBD Salary: $120000 - $160000 per annum + Bonus

Summary of Responsibilities:

The Senior Underwriter role is responsible for the assessment of new business, additions or alterations for all of the risk products with significant autonomy and for mentoring less experienced underwriters while providing excellent service to internal and external clients in a changing and flexible work environment. This role also offers the opportunity to work closely with the Technical Underwriting Manager and the Underwriting Services Manager by assisting with the development of underwriting philosophies, guidelines and training programmes. The successful candidate will work across the Retail, Group, Corporate, and Direct product lines to directly support the achievement of the strategic initiative to deliver an innovative solution to the Retail life insurance market.

Principal Responsibilities:

* Underwrite all product lines and benefits within established Underwriting authority and within benchmarks, ensuring adherence to the established Service Level Agreements
* Demonstrate exceptional assessment skills by deriving keen insights from detailed medical and financial information and evidence, including the assessment of dependent risk factors
* Adoption of the underwriting standards and principles to ensure profitable and reasonable risks are accepted
* Recording, updating and maintaining daily work and workflow
* Contribute to development and monitoring of underwriting rules for the automated underwriting engine
* Contribute underwriting knowledge to the development of new products and features
* Keeping abreast of industry trends and providing input into the formulation of the underwriting policy, philosophy and process
* Work closely with the Head of Customer Relations to resolve and report on Underwriting related complaints
* Assist with internal and external quality assurance as required; including the provision of reports to senior managers and external auditors
* Provide technical advice and guidance to other team members, including reviewing and signing off when second signatory is required
* Provide coaching and mentoring to new or less experienced underwriters within the team
* Build and maintain strong relationships with all external stakeholders, including but not limited to Financial Advisers and Brokers, Service Providers, Reinsurers, Superannuation Trustees and Fund Administrators, and others
* Perform other appropriate tasks designated by the Underwriting Services Manager or their delegate
* Professionally and openly communicate with external and internal clients whilst developing new relationships and enhancing existing ones
* Work within Legal, Compliance and other regulatory framework
* Provide underwriting opinions to Claims and other teams
* Perform other appropriate tasks as designated by the Underwriting Service Manager
* Display a positive and enthusiastic attitude and actively seek to contribute to workplace culture

Knowledge/Skills/Competencies Required:

* Self motivated with excellent time management skills
* Ability to contribute positively and consistently to the Underwriting Services team and demonstrate the rules of engagement through example and the culture of protecting the lifestyles of customers
* Strong experience in underwriting of all risk products (Term Life, TPD, Trauma/Critical Illness, IP/SCI ad Business Expenses)
* Ability to quickly develop and maintain relationships at all levels whilst displaying strong interpersonal skills
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills
* Solid demonstrable commercial and industry awareness
* Strong customer focus, excellent problem solving ability, analytical skills and adaptability to change
* Computer literate in Microsoft Word, Excel, Email, internet, PowerPoint, etc.
* Demonstrated desire to be actively involved in industry seminars, discussion groups and forums

Qualification Required:

* Minimum five years underwriting experience across all product types (Life, TPD, Trauma, IP and Business Expenses)
* Demonstrated insight and expertise in the life insurance industry and underwriting profession
* Superior working knowledge of relevant regulatory and legislative policy
* Bachelor's Degree in a relevant qualification (preferred)
* ALUCA Membership (preferred)
